History

The Anglican Parish of Bendigo North consists now of St Clement's Church Huntly and St Luke's Church White Hills. Until November 2009 it also included St John's North Bendigo. These centres all have a long history. Worship began in the Huntly area in the late 1850's; at White Hills in 1853 and at St John's in 1901.

At Huntly, worship was first conducted in the Shire Offices and then at the Presbyterian Church and only in 1904 was a decision made to build a church. The current building was erected in 1973 and replaced the original timber church.

The worship life of St John's began in the nearby State School on August 18th 1901. The foundation stone for the present building was laid on August 26th 1903 and the building dedicated by Bishop Langley on November 27th in that same year. One of the first Boy Scout Troops to be established in Victoria was commenced at St John's Church in 1908. Worship ceased at this site in November 2009.

St Luke's White Hills was opened for worship by Archdeacon A Crawford of Castlemaine on 24th November 1863. This followed the establishment of a "Tent Sanctuary" on the seventh White Hill in 1853, probably on the opposite side of Napier Street to the current building. A brick Sunday School was built in 1855. A porch was added to the present Church in 1985; the idea having been raised as early as 1969.
