Parish of Tongala

St James’, Tongala and St Matthew’s, Stanhope

The Parish of Tongala is situated within the Dairy Industry in the Shire of Campaspe.  The Parish covers the towns of Tongala, Girgarre and Stanhope and has an approximate population of 2,600 people and borders on the Parishes of Echuca, Kyabram, Rochester and the Parish of Rushworth in the Diocese of Wangaratta.  The factories within the area are Nestles’ Australia Ltd, Coprice Feeds, WH Greenham & Son Pty Ltd, Bonlac Foods Ltd and Heinz Australia.

We aim to strengthen our faith in both centres by prayer, encourage greater involvement in worship by Lay leadership, provide outreach among young adults and families and continue ministry among the elderly, particularly at the Tongala and District Aged Care complex.

Other Activities

Every third Wednesday, a Service of Holy Communion is celebrated at the Aged Care complex in Tongala.

On the fifth Sunday in the month, there is one service in the parish at 10.30 am – alternated between the centres – and it is followed by lunch.

A committee currently operates two Op Shops – at Girgarre and Stanhope
