Unity in Kerang

By Jacqui Minnis

Once again, all five churches across Kerang took part in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity from 18-24th May. The materials were prepared by the Inter-Church Relations Department of the Armenian Apostolic Church, along with the Armenian Catholic and Evangelical Churches. The resources are jointly published by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the World Council of Churches (WCC).

Each weeknight, approximately 40 faithful Christians from all denominations gathered in a different host church for a short worship and prayer service in the style of that church. Each night we were presented with some questions to ponder in small groups. The questions were drawn from Ephesians 4 and prompted us to consider how we might come together as the body of Christ in our community.

St. John’s had the pleasure of hosting the service on Thursday night and were given the question ‘What collaborative initiatives can our various communities undertake to celebrate our shared faith in Jesus Christ and the unity established through baptism?’ Many great ideas were raised and our prayer is that these will bear fruit. The week concluded on a high point of an ecumenical service to celebrate Pentecost in worship together. People from all churches commented on feeling God’s Spirit present throughout the week and a true sense of unity amongst those present. We are looking forward to what God brings about next through God’s people here in Kerang.
